Planning a winter wedding in Pittsburgh can be incredibly romantic — candlelight ceremonies, cozy receptions, snow-dusted portraits, and elegant indoor venues. But winter weddings here require one thing couples often don’t anticipate:
Your timeline matters more than your décor.
Because in Pittsburgh, winter daylight disappears fast.
From November through March, sunset can happen as early as 4:45 PM, which dramatically affects ceremony time, portraits, and the overall flow of your wedding day. As a Pittsburgh wedding photographer, helping couples plan a realistic winter timeline is one of the most important things I do to make sure you actually get the photos you’re envisioning.
Below is exactly how to structure your day so you still get beautiful natural-light images — even in January.

Unlike summer weddings where you have hours of evening light, Pittsburgh winters bring:
The good news? Winter weddings photograph beautifully here — if the day is planned around daylight instead of the reception.
Your ceremony time should be based on sunset… not dinner.
Here’s why timeline planning matters so much:
| Month | Approx Sunset |
|---|---|
| November | 5:00 PM |
| December | 4:45 PM |
| January | 5:05 PM |
| February | 5:30 PM |
| March | 6:10 PM |
That means if your ceremony starts at 4:30 PM in December, your couple portraits will be in complete darkness.
Most couples don’t realize this until it’s too late — which is why timeline planning early is essential.

For the best portraits and stress-free photos:
Your ceremony should start 2–3 hours before sunset.
Example:
December wedding → 4:45 sunset
Ideal ceremony start → 1:30–2:00 PM
This allows:
And you still get a cozy candlelit reception.

Here’s a real-world example that works beautifully:
11:30 AM — Photographer arrives / detail photos
(invites, rings, dress, shoes)
12:15 PM — Getting ready photos
1:15 PM — First look (HIGHLY recommended in winter)
1:30 PM — Wedding party portraits
2:00 PM — Couple portraits
2:30 PM — Hide away before ceremony
2:45 PM — Ceremony
3:15 PM — Family portraits
3:45 PM — Golden hour portraits (last daylight)
4:30 PM — Cocktail hour / reception begins
5:30 PM — Introductions & dinner
6:30 PM — Toasts
7:00 PM — First dances
7:30 PM — Open dance floor
You get both daylight portraits AND a full reception.

In summer, a first look is optional.
In winter Pittsburgh weddings?
It’s honestly the difference between relaxed portraits and rushed photos.
A first look allows:
And couples almost always tell me afterward it was their favorite moment of the day.
If temperatures are low, I always help couples plan indoor backup portrait locations. Beautiful winter options include historic hotels and elegant venues such as Omni William Penn Hotel, The Pennsylvanian, and the garden rooms at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
Even if you only step outside for 5–10 minutes, we can still create romantic winter images and then move indoors comfortably.

Winter weddings can be some of the most elegant and intimate weddings of the entire year — they just need intentional scheduling.
The most common regret couples share?
Scheduling the ceremony based on church availability or dinner timing instead of daylight.
Your photos can’t be moved to tomorrow.
Your timeline determines your images forever.

Every wedding day is different, and I help all of my couples build a custom timeline based on their ceremony location, reception venue, and time of year so the day flows naturally and you still get the light and relaxed experience you’re hoping for.
